Who Am I?

My name is Dr Sara Pugh, and I live in Leeds. I have a degree in Biochemistry and Genetics, plus a PhD in Molecular Mechanism. I’m also a certified Neuro-Therapist, Pilates instructor and Yoga teacher and have been delivering classes for over 11 years. Some people might wonder why a hardcore research scientist decided to start making online exercise programmes, but there’s a good reason. I know what it’s like when aches and pains spoil daily life.
When I was younger, I played a variety of sports at a high level. I loved staying active, and as a scientist, I had an interest in bio-mechanics and the workings of the body and brain. But working in a lab took its toll on my body. I started suffering from backache, shoulder pain and stiffness. I wasn’t able to play as many sports, and I became overweight. At first, I just accepted it – backache was part of my day-to-day. Then I discovered Pilates. That was 14 years ago and has led me to where I am today. Since then, I’ve had extensive training in movement, bio-mechanics, rehabilitation, massage, myofascial release, functional neurology and hypnosis from highly regarded coaches and trainers from around the globe. I made it my mission to beat my backache, and I achieved it – I was even able to start gymnastics in my 40s, something I never would have thought possible.

But what has all this got to do with you?

Is Floor-less Online Pilates Right For You?

This programme is designed for women over 50 who don’t want to exercise on the floor because they:

Struggle getting up and down off the floor
Are recovering from surgery or have an injury
Feel stiffness, soreness, aches or pains in their back or joints

Now that’s not to say that men or younger women can’t sign up. It’s simply that I created the videos with a specific audience in mind so I could cater to the most common issues they have.

The exercises are easy to follow and simple to do. They include a mixture of standing and seated exercises that help improve flexibility and movement.

No fancy equipment or exercise mats are required – just a chair and some basic household items for some of the lessons (tins and a towel, for example).

This is a gentle exercise program with modifications for those that need them, and suggestions for more progressive exercises once you feel more confident.

These aren’t fat-burning aerobics workouts full of intensive exercises. So if you are already pretty active and prefer a more strenuous workout, then this programme probably isn’t what you are looking for.

Yes, of course. I designed this programme specifically for women over 50 who struggle with mobility and balance, but that doesn’t mean it is limited to them. If you think you’d benefit from a seated and standing exercise programme, then you are more than welcome to join up.

However, please bear in mind that this is a gentle exercise programme to deal with specific issues, so if you are already running marathons every weekend and want a workout that challenges you, this probably isn’t the right programme for you.

Don’t worry. If you are struggling with any of the movements, I’ve included modifications to help you out. And if you find the lessons are too difficult, I’m always on hand to provide guidance on how to modify an exercise to suit your body. Plus, my monthly Q&A webinar is the perfect place to get more tips and advice on making the programme work for you.

I would always recommend speaking to your doctor first if you have any concerns about exercising.

However, all the exercises in this programme have been checked by an osteopath and physiotherapist, as well as being tested by women with various medical issues.
